Being a young farmer in Zimbabwe : PART 5

For some, being 21 years and a farmer is a laughable dream. For Simbarashe Rumumba(SR), it is his day to day life. One may not have all to start, but going step by step and starting small has seen this young farmer registering success. I caught up with Simbarashe and this is how our conversation went:

RK: Can you tell us about you 

SR: Hello everyone my name is Simbarashe Rumumba. I’m a 21-year-old male doing food science at Chinhoyi University doing and a young entrepreneur.


RK: Can you share your story 

SR: Back in the day my mom cultivated a culture in us that if you have land grow your own garden and it has been that way even up to now so I thought, why not go big? So, after my studies, A level (2018) I relocated to the farm where I stay to date, and as a food scientist and a passionate farmer I have ventured into roadrunner, production ducks, some turkey, rabbits and goats though still in small numbers but eventually we will get there step by step. From these animals I’m hoping to provide quality meat to people at large with high hopes that if God permits, I open a traditional restaurant that serves all these coming from my farm 


RK:  What motivated you to start farming?

SR:  My motivation has been my mother. As a single parent she has been in agriculture industry her whole life, watching her for the past years running errands all by herself pushed me to start early in agribusiness.


RK: How has been your experience?

SR: I started off end of 2018, well it’s been a journey, a bumpy one but an interesting one at that. It has been very educational as it has taught me much on decision making, strategy and financial literacy. I thought maybe it’s just planting, management, harvesting and making a lot of money then enjoying it but it goes beyond that it’s a business and to realise profits it needs strategy as they say "experience is the best teacher" they never lied, it is!


RK: Which region are you in?

SR: I’m in region 2 Mvurwi Mash central


RK: What has been your major challenge(s)

SR: Water has been a threat to my production especially winter production. I will shift to plant my crops at my friend's farm about 2km from my farm and commuting daily is really painful if that can be addressed then I know I can maximize throughout the year non-stop and also equipment to use right now with the disease outbreak in cattle we don’t have anything to use. Hiring tractors is very expensive.


RK: Has age been a hinderance? If so how?

SR: It has not been actually it has been a push factor every day that I wake up I tell myself one day at a time one step at a time is all in need to reach to goal being this young and managing hectarage some thought I could never do its a win for me age it’s just a number.


RK: Where do you see your farming business in 5 years?

SR: Food should change lives of people. Eating healthy is what I’m working towards, providing quality food for the country and those beyond our borders with time, job creation to better lives. It’s my wish that in the coming years I will be able to reach a certain capacity like I said I’m hoping to make my farm self-sustaining and it can happen 


RK: If you were put in a room with the Permanent Secretary for Agriculture, what would you tell him?

SR: Youths can! It’s now or never small-scale farmers need attention too Sir. Equipment distribution has to reach the grass roots as much as I know farmers are willing to work to put food on the market but we need resources. If it was possible Government should buy those drilling machines get it to be a command water and to avail water to people. I remember the Perm Sec saying that maize in summer can be planted twice but looking at it the other would be under irrigation and it has to be given to all No One Should Be Left Behind 


RK: What would you like say to other young people out there?

SR: Life is what you make it in the real world(business). There's no spoon feeding lets be hungry for success the moment is now, it’s now or never agribusiness is the way, it’s the backbone of Zimbabwe 


RK: Closing words?

SR: If our minds can conceive it and our hearts can believe it then we can achieve it! Nothing is impossible literally nothing
