Meet Prosper Chikwara:ZFU Farmer Of The Year

“FARMING BLINDLY IS NOT AN OPTION YET FARMERS IN ZIMBABWE ARE DOING IT,” SAID ZIMBABWE FARMERS’ UNION YOUNG FARMER OF THE YEAR PROSPER CHIKWARA. “IF FARMHUT IS THERE TO PROVIDE PRECISION MARKETING THEN ITS A WAY TO GO”.

PROSPER CHIKWARA ZFU YOUNG FARMER OF THE YEAR

PROSPER CHIKWARA is a young farmer based in Matebeleland South. He is mainly involved in Horticulture and Aquaculture, on a commercial scale. He is looking to start commercial goat farming shortly. He started farming in 2015 when he did some Moringa trees on his family farm. Prosper's desired project was Goat farming even when he did the Moringa project, but just like the other 7.1 million smallholder farmers in Zimbabwe, he could not access funds to do this project. He then decided to do a horticultural [potato project] project in 2016, at a scale of 0.5 hectares. Sadly the project was a flop and he only managed to sell 20 pockets out of the entire harvest.

Prosper had many challenges starting and almost gave up, but despite all the struggle, he had a passion for farming and he wanted to do it for the people. His first successful project was in April 2017, when he did 15000 heads of cabbages and 5000 stations of pepper. It was only after this that he realized and appreciated the true value of farming and agriculture. Water was also a problem but he used the money that he made in his first successful projects to drill boreholes and also installed solar panels for green energy. He did not stop there he went on to clear more space in the farm investing back the money they are getting back in the business.

Mr. Chikwara believes that farming is a million-dollar business, and he is looking to do it until he gets the million dollars. He aims to inspire young farmers in Zimbabwe that no matter how hard it is in the farming industry there is always that one project that's going to get you through it all. He said in 5 years he is going to be one of the young millionaires in the Agriculture Sector. He also made a point that farming can be done as a social enterprise but a farmer should always have a business mind to be successful in the industry.

It's great to start and that's the most amazing day and not to stop, the same energy that you had when you were starting is the same energy that you need as well as you are going. We are all looking for a win no matter what. So if you start do not stop and you cannot be done because people eat every day', said Prosper. He said the success is not only on making money but it is mainly about eradicating hunger and poverty in Africa.

He went on to say that farmers that are practicing agriculture without any prior research are suffering losses, farmers need to understand market insights before they go on to plant any type of plant.  So if FARMHUT is there to do a market survey and help farmers find a market without facing any losses then it's going the right way. But they need to build trust between them and farmers.

FARMHUT provides premium markets, consultation, job searches as well as many other services that are crucial for Farmers to succeed. It is using technology to destroy the barrier between farmers and the commercial world,  It is definitely a go-to tech solution for all agro related problems.
